West Coast of North America Inuvik, Northwest Territories - Victoria, British Columbia
July - August 1999

This was my first attempt at a proper bicycle tour. If one is suppose to cycle all the way to their goal without any help, then I can say that I failed. But, personally I believe that it is the journey that counts the most (or is that simply an excuse). And for my first real adventure, I sure did have fun and made a lot of memories.

This journey began after years of a so-called stable life, and I was looking forward to a different beat in life. Graduated university, and figured that it was time for something else. I wanted to travel overseas, but I found that it was quite important for me to discover a bit more about my own country. I've been working for the Hostelling International for a little bit, and realised how much more foreigners have seen my own country than I have. This made me realise that I should see Canada before I go overseas, so I can describe the different places and cultures within my own country.

The flight to Inuvik was an adventure in itself, since it was my first time into the Northwest Territories. Internationally and nationally, Canada is known for it's frozen tundra and the arctic, but how many Canadians have actually ventured far enough north to experience the presented stereotypical image of Canada? I can imagine not very many. The stretch of road between Inuvik and Dawson City is very unique. The Dempster Highway is over 700kms with only a a handful of spots of civilization. That's if you call a motel with a gas station a place of civilization. The north is truely isolated, and the fact that the sun does not set in the summer is another adventure in itself.

Preparation is the best recommendation I can give to people who would like to venture to the north. Bring spare parts, and plenty of food. For campers, it's wonderful because you can camp, virtually anywhere you wish. And just cross your finger that you'll encounter some of the fine wildlife.

As you see, similar to most of the other pages, I really haven't done anything else to this page. Hopefully I'll have more pages up in this section in the near future. More useful facts for other potential cyclists.
